With the UFSL Draft coming up this weekend, there are many players excited to see where they get drafted. There are some players projected going in the first round in all mock drafts, and there's some players that are under the radar that could turn into huge steals. Quarterback Landon Carter could be one of those players. You may not recognize this name, but the name you may recognize is his agent's. Nick Catania has been known to take on many players that come out of no where to impress lots of people. When asked about taking Landon Carter under his wing, Catania commented, "I've never been so sure about a player. Whether he stays a quarterback or not, it won't matter. He is an athletic freak and will become a steal where ever he ends up playing."
So who is Landon Carter? For those of you who don't remember this kid, he played quarterback for the University of Oregon as a true freshman four years ago. At eighteen years old this kid led a young Oregon team to an undefeated season, a Pac 12 Championship, and a national championship. Carter threw for 379 yards and four touchdowns, while throwing one interception in the championship game.
Most of Carter's game statistics looked like this after every game. He threw for 512 yards and ran for 67 against UCLA, and threw for six touchdown passes against the University of Arizona. Carter ended his season with 3400 passing yards, 564 rushing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, and 6 rushing touchdowns. Carter's potential had scouts drooling waiting for him to enter the draft. But unfortunately for Carter, during that next spring Carter torn his ACL playing basketball with the team after one of the practices. Carter spent the next couple years going to school, getting his degree in business, and working out for hours everyday with his physical therapist. Carter never got to play another game with the Oregon Ducks, but he stayed on the team, practiced with the team once he was healthy, and has completely fallen off the radar entering this draft as a 22 year old quarterback that hasn't played a game since he was 18.
According to his agent, Carter's strength lies in his throwing accuracy. He seems to always hit the receiver where only he can catch it, and where the defender can't put a hand on it. Carter's vision as a quarterback is another one of his strengths. He knows when to pass it, when to throw it away, and when to break off a run for the first down. His arm strength is the only thinking keeping this kid from getting drafted early. This kid has loads of potential though, and has a chance to be a great quarterback in this league.
With many great rookies entering the draft this year, it's really a toss up when it comes to knowing where Landon Carter where get drafted to, and if he will even end up as a starting quarterback. Team's haven't shown much interest in him thus far. Carter commented about his thoughts about the draft: "I know if one of these teams put their faith into me at quarterback that I won't disappoint. Maybe pick up some early defensive players and pick me up as a late steal. If nobody wants to take a chance with me I'll be forced to move positions. I'm tall and athletic and I've got great hands, so if it comes down to it, I want to play tight end, or maybe wide receiver."
With the draft coming up, the league is buzzing about Carter and the rest of these potential stars of the league. We're going to see lots of excited young faces, along with some heart broken ones. We'll come back next week with a draft re-cap and analysis.
