Nicks was a First Team All-American at UNC
National Football League? Nope. Canadian Football League? Nope. United Football League? Nope. Arena Football League? Nope, not even that. After his illustrious career at the University of North Carolina, Demaryius Nicks has been rejected by most major professional football leagues.
Known for his elite route running and high-end speed, combined with great size for a wide receiver, he has not been able to latch on with a team anywhere. Why? He is lazy as hell. Blessed with all of this god-given talent, apparently he feels as if he does not need to put in any work to succeed at a high-level of football. He just has not been able to grasp the concept of putting in effort.
After going undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft, Nicks signed with the practice squad of the Atlanta Falcons. They, however, ended up cutting him three weeks later and he signed with the BC Lions of the CFL. He spent the rest of 2009 with the Lions, finishing with thirty-five catches for eight hundred yards and six touchdowns. During the off-season, Nicks was cut after testing positive for marijuana. After being cut by the BC Lions, the Omaha Nighthawks expressed interest in signing him, but balked at a contract offer, citing Nicks' extra baggage as to why.
It cannot get any lower than getting rejected by the UFL, can it? Yes, for Demaryius Nicks it can. A few teams in the Arena Football League toyed with the idea of signing Nicks, but his ridiculous salary demands made them put that idea to rest real quick. How can someone with so much talent end up going nowhere?
ESPN.com's Matthew Berry caught up with an unemployed Nicks in 2010 to get his reaction to how his professional career was going thus far:
MB: So Demaryius, what do you feel is the reason for you not being able to stick with a team?
DN[/b]: Head Coaches, General Manager and anyone else with a say around an organization being idiots.
MB: What do you mean?
DN[/b]: Man, have you seen how much talent I have? Have you seen some of my highlight tapes from high school and college? I'm a freak of nature.
MB: Okay...but that still does not explain why you have not been signed.
DN[/b]: Look, I failed a drug test or two...or three. Anyways, that is not the point. I am clean for now and am in the best physical shape of my life. The NFL, CFL, UFL and whatever unimportant football league out there would not know talent if it came up and smacked them in the face. I'm 6' 3", 229 pounds, run a 4.3 40 Yard Dash and am one of the best route runners out there. Would YOU sign someone like that, Matt?
MB: Probably not, you have way too much baggage for me.
DN[/i]: Baggage? Come on man. I told you that those days are behind me and until I get ahold of my old dealer, I am clean. I can guarantee you that I will have a job soon.
Nicks has that swagger and charisma that just makes you love him
Or not...after sitting out the entire 2010 season due to a lack of interest, Nicks has decided to join the start-up USFL. Since he has to be such an attention whore, he decided to wait until the day after the inaugural draft to join the league. Nicks has asked that all of his offers from every USFL team be directed to his twitter due to a vacation to visit his good buddy, Geno Smith this week. Do not let his short absence deter you GM's, Demaryius Nicks is back with a vengeance. This twenty-two year old still has a lot left in the tank and has a lot to prove to get that monkey off his back. Will he show up, or will he go back to being a shadow of his former self? Only time will tell...
