Seattle Stormtroopers Draft Review
by Aldous Steele
As the inaugural UFSL season is set to get underway, all four teams theoretically should be pretty equal after the draft. But, combining both the knowledge of the GMs and activity, the divide between the best and worst team in the league tends to be pretty significant in the first season. Here we will look at the job Stormtroopers GM swoosh did in the draft that will help determine the future of the franchise.
Their first pick of the draft was athlete Lord Vader with the third overall pick. Vader has since decided on playing MLB and he very well might be the best of the top three picks. He knows he's good and makes sure you know it too but also is a great teammate and leader with tons of knowledge about the game. He not only will impact this team by being a dominant player, but he will be a reason why Seattle will rarely be out-managed.
Vader, selected third overall, will be a key cog to this Seattle team
Next, with the sixth overall pick, was strong safety Jamaal Stockton. He will bring a lot of speed to the Stormtroopers' defense and should provide a lot of activity for this team. Despite it's reputation, safety is always an important but undervalued position and having a good one like Stockton to build around is definitely a good thing.
In the third round, Seattle drafted KJ Bryant. Originally a tight end, he ended up moving to free safety to allow Aldous Steele to remain on the offensive side of the ball. With that move, it is clear he is an excellent team player and will make a strong pair with Jamaal Stockton to form, without a doubt, the best safety duo on paper.
With swoosh's next pick, he chose to take safety Jordan Oakley to play wide receiver. Oakley adds a lot of speed to Seattle's offense but his hands leave a lot to be desired. But, he has been one of the hardest working players in the league so far and it appears that he will be able to adjust and improve to become the go to receiver on this team.
Again opting to bolster the secondary, Taylor Green was selected with their fifth round pick. Green has a very strong reputation as a top cornerback and will bring a lot of experience to the team. This is a high upside pick and Green could be one of the best value picks for Seattle.
Out of North Carolina State, Green (1) is expected to be a leader on this defense.
In the sixth round, the Stormtroopers added to their soon to be drafted quarterback's arsenal with the selection of wide receiver Keon Henderson. Henderson looks to be a reliable possession receiver and he looks to be player that will put in effort to be a solid player.
Finally, with their seventh pick, swoosh chose his quarterback: Landon Carter. Carter, a southpaw from Oregon, clearly has the full confidence from management that he will not only be a good, but great quarterback and this late in the draft, that is always an excellent thing to get. His activity is expected to be high but if anything, this may be the team's downfall. I'd love for him to prove me wrong but I'm just not sold yet on Carter's ability to be a top quarterback yet.
In the eighth round, cornerback Bam Risso was chosen to complete the Seattle secondary. Risso is an unconventional cornerback with abilities more like a safety so he has a lot of work to do to be able to keep up with some of the wide receivers in the UFSL.
Maybe I'm biased but I would say the Stormtroopers easily got the steal of the draft in the ninth with the selection of Aldous Steele. Originally a quarterback, he succumbed to the request of the team to move positions but put up a fight before being allowed to play tight end. While it is rumored that he still thinks he would have been the better choice at quarterback, he was willing to make the move but he has the potential to be one of the elite players in the league and with a pick just three picks before the final selection of the draft, that is huge for a team's chances of winning a championship.
One of the hardest working players you'll find, Steele may be disappointed he isn't playing quarterback but that doesn't mean he won't do everything it takes to be an elite tight end.
And, last but not least, Mr. Irrelevant. Prince Sackleton was taken with the 38th and final pick of the inaugural draft to play outside linebacker. He likely will be nothing special but playing along Tyler Barabash and newly signed free agent Ken Sady at linebacker, his deficiencies should mostly be masked by the skill around him.
Overall, the Stormtroopers had a very strong draft with just about every player selected poised to make a strong positive impact for the team and many with the ability to be leaders. This is a team that surely can't be written off and should be able to make a run for a championship in season one.
