Dick “Night Train” Lane returns from the grave to play in the UFSL. Dick Lane was a defensive back who played for the Los Angeles Rams. He still holds the record for most interceptions in a season at 14, which is remarkable because he did it in a 12 game season. He played from 1952-1965.
Lane was an orphan who was found by a woman named Ella Lane and was subsequently adopted. Lane never met his parents. He went to a junior college in Nebraska before enlisting in the U.S. Army, became a defensive back after a tryout with the LA Rams.
The “Night Train” was known for a special tackle, the “Night Train Necktie” where he extended his arms around the ball carriers neck and/or head and subsequently threw them to the ground. His physical nature combined with his reputation as a ball hawk earned him NFL Hall of Fame honors in 1974. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players never drafted, and one of the best defensive backs ever.
Just like in the NFL, he showed up late to the party in the UFSL and was not drafted. Luckily for Lane, his son, Richard Walker, found the fountain of youth, and sprinkled it on his fathers’ grave. Lane promptly woke up and immediately threw his name into the UFSL.
