The UFSL has invited a select group of league representatives to several bowl games this season, in order to increase awareness for the league and potentially draw recruits toward the UFSL and away from the NFL. The first instance of this is the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, which will be attended by a small contingency of Reno Predators players, including Rock Afella, Devin Street, and Night Train Lane.
The Gildan New Mexico Bowl will pit the 8-4 Temple Owls against the 8-4 Wyoming Cowboys. It would be considered a huge coup for the smaller UFSL if the players could convince Temple running back Bernard Pierce to join the startup league instead of taking his talents elsewhere, although it is unknown if the NFL has Pierce under serious consideration or not. Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith, another player the UFSL has targeted, has already given an interview saying that he would be likely to join the UFSL if a quarterback spot opened up, or if an expansion team was formed. “Yeah, I think I’d like to play there. I know I’m not really good enough for the NFL, but I am easily better than a lot of the arena players, and would probably make it in the CFL as well. I don’t really want to go to Canada, though. Once I heard about this new UFSL, I jumped on the opportunity. I’m in talks with them, and I haven’t officially made up my mind, but I think if a good fit is there, I’d take it before going to either the CFL or arena.”
The league talked to Street about the game as well. “Honestly, I’m not sure how many of these guys are even going to be UFSL caliber players. I mean Temple’s not exactly known for its football, and Wyoming is known as one of the teams people complain about Boise State for beating. I did hear that Temple has a pretty decent running game this year, and maybe the Wyoming quarterback could come on as a backup or an expansion team player, but really, I think there aren’t going to be many guys to get from this one. I’m scheduled for 4 more bowl appearances, so hopefully they are better, because this one I don’t foresee much success. Maybe a few linemen, we desperately need linemen to join the league. If Temple’s running game is decent then I’m sure it’s partially the offensive line and not all the back, so hopefully we can sign up some of them. Otherwise, I’m afraid this one we’ll be nearly empty handed coming back to league offices.”
Rumor has it that Griffins running back Maple Syrup’s agent Duckberg may also be in attendance at the game. If he is, it will likely not be in any official capacity, as the league doesn’t generally send agents on its behalf. If he attends, it will be because unfortunately, the agent attends Temple. His player is from Penn State, which explains how he was good enough to join the league, as opposed to the players who will be out on the field next week.
